Pell Grants are awarded to students through financial needs, according to the committee’s website. Students who attend post-secondary schools such as universities, colleges, trade schools and other training programs are eligible for these grants.

Unlike other federal financial aid programs, Pell Grants do not have to be repaid, which is an added benefit to them, according to the committee’s website.

Committee Chairman Bobby Scott said in a press release that this new act can give students the opportunity to receive more money than they spend.

The College Affordability Act is a responsible, comprehensive overhaul of our higher education system that would mean students can spend less and earn more,” Scott said.

Ronald Schurin, a University of Connecticut political science professor and Mansfield town councilman said that this new College Affordability Act can be beneficial for students.

It benefits all of society to have people educated to the maximum,” Schurin said. “The more educated students are, the more productive they become.”
