Across many predominantly white institutions, Black female students often face microaggressions and criticisms for their natural hair. To cope, many students rely on braiding, as it’s more manageable and less likely to face scrutiny. They also feel that it aligns more with beauty standards. Unfortunately, at the University of Connecticut, it can be difficult to find accessible and affordable places to get your hair styled.

In this episode of Crowned and Proud, you will hear real black female students at Uconn share their stories on the microagressions they face on their natural hair, and the barriers they combat in order to get hair care. You will learn more about the role hair plays in black female students lives at UConn.
