These are some of the words or phras\u00ades delet\u00aded from fed\u00ader\u00adal agen\u00adcies\u2019 web\u00adsites and tar\u00adget\u00aded by grant cuts in the past year \u2013 just one part of a sweep\u00ading cam\u00adpaign by Pres\u00adi\u00addent Don\u00adald Trump\u2019s admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion to remove \u201cDEI rhetoric\u201d from pub\u00adlic life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first year of his sec\u00adond term, Trump has used threats to fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading, exec\u00adu\u00adtive orders and the vast pow\u00ader and influ\u00adence of the fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment to try to dis\u00adman\u00adtle diver\u00adsi\u00adty, equi\u00adty and inclu\u00adsion pro\u00adgrams that he claims are dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry and ille\u00adgal. The impact has been felt nation\u00adwide, with some cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtions and school sys\u00adtems renam\u00ading DEI poli\u00adcies and ini\u00adtia\u00adtives or abol\u00adish\u00ading them alto\u00adgeth\u00ader. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts who oppose this cul\u00adture shift around DEI say it is cen\u00adsor\u00adship, era\u00adsure and an inef\u00adfi\u00adcient use of gov\u00adern\u00adment time that could fur\u00adther harm already dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtaged peo\u00adple in high\u00ader edu\u00adca\u00adtion, pub\u00adlic schools, the work\u00adforce and the fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI think it\u2019s just a way to erase cer\u00adtain peo\u00adple\u2019s exis\u00adtence,\u201d said Mic\u00adah Heumann, direc\u00adtor of UConn\u2019s Office of Under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adate Research who has researched racism in high\u00ader edu\u00adca\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heumann said the attacks on DEI pro\u00adgrams and research is a loss for human rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI real\u00adly think you can judge a soci\u00adety by how they treat the most vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble\u2026 and that\u2019s [what] we\u2019re talk\u00ading about with diver\u00adsi\u00adty, equi\u00adty, inclu\u00adsion,\u201d Heumann said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just race or gen\u00adder. When we\u2019re talk\u00ading about DEI, we\u2019re talk\u00ading about first-gen stu\u00addents. We\u2019re talk\u00ading about vets\u2026 We\u2019re talk\u00ading about get\u00adting acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legal\u00adi\u00adty of DEI <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accord\u00ading to Diver\u00adsi\u00adty, Equi\u00adty & Inclu\u00adsion Inc., a non\u00adprof\u00adit orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to DEI edu\u00adca\u00adtion and resources, the phrase entails frame\u00adworks of how orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions should enable access for mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized groups. These frame\u00adworks are intend\u00aded to move orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions beyond sur\u00adface-lev\u00adel rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion and toward prop\u00ader inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of diverse groups to ben\u00ade\u00adfit every\u00adone, the orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\u00adev\u00ader, Trump has insist\u00aded that DEI has kept orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions from hir\u00ading based on mer\u00adit.  In an exec\u00adu\u00adtive order to \u201cend ille\u00adgal DEI,\u201d Trump calls DEI \u201crad\u00adi\u00adcal\u201d and \u201cdan\u00adger\u00adous\u201d and claims that DEI has reversed \u201cthe progress made in the decades since the Civ\u00adil Rights Act of 1964 toward a col\u00ador\u00adblind and com\u00adpe\u00adtence-based work\u00adplace.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDEI\u2019s foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal rhetoric and ideas fos\u00adter inter\u00adgroup hos\u00adtil\u00adi\u00adty and author\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan\u00adism,\u201d the order said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The claim that DEI is ille\u00adgal is unsub\u00adstan\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded in the order or by the White House, as is the asser\u00adtion that \u201cDEI hir\u00ading\u201d is not based on mer\u00adit. Some legal experts say these orders vio\u00adlate the law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accord\u00ading to Dan Bar\u00adrett, legal direc\u00adtor of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Civ\u00adil Lib\u00ader\u00adties Union (ACLU) of Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut, Trump\u2019s exec\u00adu\u00adtive order that threat\u00adens fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading for schools with DEI poli\u00adcies vio\u00adlates the First, Fifth, and 14th Amend\u00adments of the Con\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t just tell schools there\u2019s a vague list of top\u00adics that I won\u2019t let you teach, and if you do, I\u2019m going to imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly pull all your fund\u00ading,\u201d Bar\u00adrett said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut Attor\u00adney Gen\u00ader\u00adal William Tong said he also believes that the fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment lever\u00adag\u00ading pow\u00ader over the states with DEI attacks is a breach of sov\u00ader\u00adeign\u00adty for the states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou do your job. We\u2019ll do our job,\u201d Tong said. \u201cYou can\u2019t com\u00adman\u00addeer state and local resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s tar\u00adget\u00ading of DEI<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEI has become a favorite scape\u00adgoat of the Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Jan\u00adu\u00adary 2025, after the col\u00adli\u00adsion of an Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Air\u00adlines plane and a U.S. Army heli\u00adcopter, Trump blamed the crash on DEI in a speech<\/a> while the inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion was still ongo\u00ading, accord\u00ading to the Asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded Press. He said he want\u00aded \u201csome\u00adbody that\u2019s psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly supe\u00adri\u00ador\u201d to the alleged diver\u00adsi\u00adty hires to work in air traf\u00adfic con\u00adtrol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked how he knew diver\u00adsi\u00adty was respon\u00adsi\u00adble for the crash, Trump said, \u201cbecause I have com\u00admon sense. OK? And unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, a lot of peo\u00adple don\u2019t. We want bril\u00adliant peo\u00adple doing this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has a his\u00adto\u00adry of ques\u00adtion\u00adable racial com\u00adments like these before enter\u00ading pol\u00adi\u00adtics and in his first term. He has con\u00adsis\u00adtent\u00adly cit\u00aded dis\u00adin\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion or made dis\u00adparag\u00ading remarks tar\u00adget\u00aded toward pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant\u00adly black com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties and coun\u00adtries, lied about Barack Obama\u2019s eth\u00adnic ori\u00adgins and reli\u00adgion, allowed and avowed sup\u00adport from white nation\u00adal\u00adist groups and shown pref\u00ader\u00aden\u00adtial treat\u00adment of white peo\u00adple in his busi\u00adness prac\u00adtices, the New York Times<\/a> report\u00aded.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has also sought to remove ref\u00ader\u00adences to diverse pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions, espe\u00adcial\u00adly trans\u00adgen\u00adder and non-bina\u00adry peo\u00adple, from fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment web\u00adsites, agen\u00adcies and archives, accord\u00ading to NPR<\/a>. This includ\u00aded direct\u00ading fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment web\u00adsites to be stripped of ref\u00ader\u00adences to his\u00adtoric firsts by women, non-white peo\u00adple and LGBTQ+ peo\u00adple. For exam\u00adple, para\u00adgraphs hon\u00ador\u00ading the Tuskegee Air\u00admen in WWII and the Women Air\u00adforce Ser\u00advice Pilots were removed from the Air Force\u2019s web\u00adsite, accord\u00ading to Time Mag\u00ada\u00adzine<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Tuskegee Air\u00admen brave\u00adly fought and died for our free\u00addoms before this nation even grant\u00aded them the full ben\u00ade\u00adfits of cit\u00adi\u00adzen\u00adship,\u201d U.S. Rep. Ter\u00adri Sewell, a Demo\u00adc\u00adrat from Alaba\u00adma, said fol\u00adlow\u00ading the removal.  \u201cTo strip them from the Air Force cur\u00adricu\u00adlum is an out\u00adra\u00adgeous betray\u00adal of our val\u00adues as Amer\u00adi\u00adcans. Their hero\u00adism is not DEI.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEI\u2019s pro\u00admot\u00ading of var\u00adi\u00adous groups of col\u00ador and gen\u00adder brings atten\u00adtion to racism and sys\u00adtemic injus\u00adtice, so it has become the lat\u00adest accept\u00adable tar\u00adget, Heumann said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis\u00adto\u00adry repeats itself. We know that,\u201d said Heumann, the father of a trans\u00adgen\u00adder son and rel\u00ada\u00adtive of Holo\u00adcaust sur\u00advivors. \u201cYou can\u2019t ignore stuff that\u2019s hap\u00adpen\u00ading, even if it\u2019s not hap\u00adpen\u00ading direct\u00adly to you, because it\u2019s hap\u00adpen\u00ading to anoth\u00ader fel\u00adlow human being.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ben\u00ade\u00adfits of DEI<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro\u00adpo\u00adnents of DEI point to sta\u00adtis\u00adti\u00adcal ben\u00ade\u00adfits of diver\u00adsi\u00adty in orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions. Accord\u00ading to man\u00adage\u00adment con\u00adsult\u00ading firm McK\u00adin\u00adsey & Co., which does exten\u00adsive eco\u00adnom\u00adic research, a greater diver\u00adsi\u00adty of peo\u00adple with dif\u00adfer\u00adent back\u00adgrounds can pro\u00advide a vari\u00adety of per\u00adspec\u00adtives to the group as a whole and boost effi\u00adcien\u00adcy. \u201cThe like\u00adli\u00adhood of diverse com\u00adpa\u00adnies out\u00adper\u00adform\u00ading indus\u00adtry peers on prof\u00aditabil\u00adi\u00adty has increased sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly,\u201d the com\u00adpa\u00adny said in a 2020 report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some stud\u00adies have also found that DEI poli\u00adcies are pop\u00adu\u00adlar among the pub\u00adlic. A CNBC sur\u00advey<\/a> from 2021 found that near\u00adly 80% of work\u00aders want to work in a place that val\u00adues DEI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heumann said he believes that DEI is \u201cnec\u00ades\u00adsary to cre\u00adate equi\u00adty in our soci\u00adety.\u201d Lin\u00adger\u00ading dis\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adties from seg\u00adre\u00adga\u00adtion and dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion still exist and need to be addressed, he said. While DEI ini\u00adtia\u00adtives don\u2019t pro\u00advide all the solu\u00adtions, \u201cI think these are ways to help offset\/balance his\u00adto\u00adry\u2026 get us back to where we need to be,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accord\u00ading to the U.S. Cen\u00adsus Bureau, Black and His\u00adpan\u00adic house\u00adhold income, for exam\u00adple, remains sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly low\u00ader than white house\u00adhold income near\u00adly across the board. Sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adly, queer peo\u00adple are more like\u00adly to face dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion in employ\u00adment and hous\u00ading, accord\u00ading to stud\u00adies by the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, Los Ange\u00adles and the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Chica\u00adgo<\/a>. The Trevor Project<\/a>, an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal sui\u00adcide pre\u00adven\u00adtion non\u00adprof\u00adit orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion for LGBTQ+ youth, said LGBTQ+ youth also face high\u00ader rates of home\u00adless\u00adness and men\u00adtal health strug\u00adgles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jef\u00adfrey Hines, vice pres\u00adi\u00addent for the Office for Inclu\u00adsion and Civ\u00adil Rights at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut and UConn Health, said he believes DEI is best if it is \u201cubiq\u00adui\u00adtous,\u201d or through\u00adout all facets of soci\u00adety.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDiver\u00adsi\u00adty is broad\u00adly defined. There\u2019s diver\u00adsi\u00adty of rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion, diver\u00adsi\u00adty of per\u00adspec\u00adtive, and diver\u00adsi\u00adty of where you live,\u201d he said. \u201cThat diver\u00adsi\u00adty actu\u00adal\u00adly improves for all, so it\u2019s not a ben\u00ade\u00adfit that sin\u00adgu\u00adlar\u00adly ben\u00ade\u00adfits and affects one group of peo\u00adple.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cul\u00adture shift sur\u00adround\u00ading DEI in fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addi\u00adtion to Trump\u2019s purg\u00ading of alleged DEI ter\u00admi\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and his\u00adto\u00adry from fed\u00ader\u00adal web\u00adsites, Trump has direct\u00aded all fed\u00ader\u00adal DEI pro\u00adgrams to be shut down,<\/a> accord\u00ading to Time mag\u00ada\u00adzine. DEI staff were also placed on paid leave and even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly ter\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded. Trump\u2019s order and the memo from the Office of Per\u00adson\u00adnel Man\u00adage\u00adment did not define what \u201cDEI offices\u201d were, but said that DEI offices may try to \u201cdis\u00adguise\u201d their true inten\u00adtions behind obscur\u00ading lan\u00adguage and encour\u00adaged employ\u00adees to report them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment is the nation\u2019s largest employ\u00ader. Some fed\u00ader\u00adal employ\u00adees who are minori\u00adties told NBC that they were afraid of the DEI cul\u00adture shift, and some LGBTQ+ work\u00aders said they would go back in the clos\u00adet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. State Depart\u00adment said in Novem\u00adber 2025<\/a> that it would be imple\u00adment\u00ading new require\u00adments for what is defined as a human rights vio\u00adla\u00adtion in diplo\u00admat\u00adic rela\u00adtions. It includ\u00aded DEI poli\u00adcies as well as abor\u00adtion and facil\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtion of mass migra\u00adtion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn recent years, new destruc\u00adtive ide\u00adolo\u00adgies have giv\u00aden safe har\u00adbor to human rights vio\u00adla\u00adtions,\u201d State Depart\u00adment deputy spokesper\u00adson Tom\u00admy Pig\u00adott said in a state\u00adment, accord\u00ading to CNN. \u201cThe Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion will not allow these human rights vio\u00adla\u00adtions, such as the muti\u00adla\u00adtion of chil\u00addren, laws that infringe on free speech, and racial\u00adly dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry employ\u00adment prac\u00adtices, to go unchecked.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cul\u00adture shift sur\u00adround\u00ading DEI in com\u00adpa\u00adnies<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion has also tar\u00adget\u00aded DEI out\u00adside of the fed\u00ader\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00adment, hav\u00ading a major impact on cul\u00adture more broad\u00adly.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions that rely on fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading, such as arts orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions that receive grants from the Nation\u00adal Endow\u00adment for the Arts, have seen fund\u00ading cuts<\/a> that some sus\u00adpect are relat\u00aded to new anti-DEI fed\u00ader\u00adal guide\u00adlines, accord\u00ading to NPR. Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut the\u00adaters have been among those nation\u00adwide that were left scram\u00adbling<\/a> to make up costs for pro\u00adduc\u00adtions years in the mak\u00ading.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with the pres\u00adsure and rhetoric from the White House, there has been a cul\u00adtur\u00adal shift around DEI, with sev\u00ader\u00adal pri\u00advate com\u00adpa\u00adnies announc\u00ading that they have rolled back DEI pro\u00adgrams in their orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions, accord\u00ading to AP News<\/a>. Major com\u00adpa\u00adnies includ\u00aded Google, Ama\u00adzon, McDonald\u2019s, and Meta \u2014 the par\u00adent com\u00adpa\u00adny of Face\u00adbook, Insta\u00adgram and Threads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google rescind\u00aded a goal to increase rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of minori\u00adties among the company\u2019s lead\u00ader\u00adship team by 30%, accord\u00ading to AP News<\/a>.  Mean\u00adwhile, Meta and Ama\u00adzon are among those com\u00adpa\u00adnies who have end\u00aded DEI pro\u00adgrams, with Ama\u00adzon refer\u00adring to DEI pro\u00adgrams as \u201cout\u00addat\u00aded.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Com\u00adpa\u00adnies have shaped their poli\u00adcies and pub\u00adlic state\u00adments around Trump\u2019s rhetoric. Some com\u00adpa\u00adnies stat\u00aded in press releas\u00ades that they had not engaged in prac\u00adtices like \u201chir\u00ading quo\u00adtas,\u201d which are one of the things Trump\u2019s ref\u00ader\u00adences when he claims DEI is dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. Wal\u00admart said it would end pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adty treat\u00adment for diverse sup\u00adpli\u00aders, make sure fam\u00adi\u00adly tents at pride events are sep\u00ada\u00adrat\u00aded from drag shows and mon\u00adi\u00adtor third-par\u00adty items to make sure they do not include prod\u00aducts for trans\u00adgen\u00adder youth, such as chest binders.  Dis\u00adney didn\u2019t men\u00adtion the word \u201cdiver\u00adsi\u00adty\u201d in its annu\u00adal report for the first time in sev\u00ader\u00adal years, Busi\u00adness Insid\u00ader report\u00aded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study by Grav\u00adi\u00adty Research<\/a> found that com\u00adpa\u00adnies quick\u00adly aban\u00addoned DEI lan\u00adguage once Trump took over. The May 2025 study found a 98% decrease in the men\u00adtion of the word \u201cDEI\u201d among 1,378 pub\u00adlic doc\u00adu\u00adments from For\u00adtune 100 com\u00adpa\u00adnies. There was also a 72% decrease in gen\u00ader\u00adal DEI lan\u00adguage and sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly less men\u00adtion of work\u00adforce demo\u00adgraph\u00adics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cul\u00adture shift sur\u00adround\u00ading DEI in edu\u00adca\u00adtion<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion has also gone after DEI in K\u201112 schools by threat\u00aden\u00ading fund\u00ading for schools with DEI pro\u00adgrams or that use \u201cgen\u00adder ide\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy\u201d in sex edu\u00adca\u00adtion cur\u00adricu\u00adlum. Activist Zin\u00adnia Jones, a trans\u00adgen\u00adder woman who writes a blog called \u201cGen\u00adder Ide\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy,\u201d said the phrase has a his\u00adto\u00adry of dehu\u00adman\u00adiza\u00adtion<\/a> against trans peo\u00adple because it asserts that being trans is an ide\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy rather than an iden\u00adti\u00adty.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hines said attacks on DEI in schools as well as the Trump administration\u2019s dec\u00adi\u00adma\u00adtion of the fed\u00ader\u00adal Depart\u00adment of Edu\u00adca\u00adtion dis\u00adpro\u00adpor\u00adtion\u00adate\u00adly impact already dis\u00adad\u00advan\u00adtaged com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It \u201cwill affect com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly mar\u00adgin\u00adal\u00adized. So, as you dis\u00adman\u00adtle Title I, many of those under-resourced schools are com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties of col\u00ador. That\u2019s a direct effect of the DOE being dis\u00adman\u00adtled,\u201d Hines said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties have also been tar\u00adget\u00aded for DEI pro\u00adgrams and oth\u00ader ini\u00adtia\u00adtives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut Sen\u00adate meet\u00ading on Nov. 3, 2025. The UConn Sen\u00adate dis\u00adcussed the anti-black racism course at the uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. In a memo<\/a> issued on July 29, 2025, the fed\u00ader\u00adal edu\u00adca\u00adtion depart\u00adment advised schools and uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties that DEI pro\u00adgrams were \u201cdis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry\u201d and unlaw\u00adful and would lose fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading. On Novem\u00adber 3, 2025, UConn\u2019s Sen\u00adate vot\u00aded to delay a require\u00adment for under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adates to take an anti-black racism course that was in devel\u00adop\u00adment since 2023, cit\u00ading Trump\u2019s orders as one of the rea\u00adsons for doing so. Instead, they will estab\u00adlish a task force to reeval\u00adu\u00adate the ABR course and like\u00adly won\u2019t offer the course until 2027. 
 
UConn\u2019s Under\u00adgrad\u00adu\u00adate Stu\u00addent Gov\u00adern\u00adment Pres\u00adi\u00addent Andy Zhang vot\u00aded in favor of the task force and believed man\u00addat\u00ading the course would bring \u201cunwant\u00aded atten\u00adtion\u201d to UConn.  \u201cWe don\u2019t want to get rid of [the anti-black racism course require\u00adment], but we want to do it in a way that is fea\u00adsi\u00adble and suc\u00adcess\u00adful and works for every\u00adone,\u201d Zhang said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UConn has also renamed its Office of Diver\u00adsi\u00adty and Inclu\u00adsion and merged it with oth\u00ader UConn depart\u00adments; Hines said this is not a result of the cur\u00adrent admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion, how\u00adev\u00ader.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUConn firm\u00adly stands by the core that DEI is foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal for our mis\u00adsion,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Made\u00adline Perez De Jesus, direc\u00adtor of Cam\u00adpus Cli\u00admate at Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut State Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty Col\u00adlege, said the col\u00adlege will also be refram\u00ading and renam\u00ading diver\u00adsi\u00adty depart\u00adments and that it is doing so in recog\u00adni\u00adtion of a cul\u00adtur\u00adal shift in pub\u00adlic think\u00ading about DEI. She said the renam\u00ading is not being done to \u201chide dis\u00adcrim\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion\u201d as the Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion has accused agen\u00adcies of doing, but to con\u00adtin\u00adue serv\u00ading every\u00adone in the best man\u00adner they can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEI \u201cmeans that because there\u2019s been a his\u00adto\u00adry of exclu\u00adsion, part of undo\u00ading and part of being tru\u00adly equi\u00adtable is to kind of high\u00adlight those groups only because they\u2019ve had a his\u00adto\u00adry in this coun\u00adtry where they have been inten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly exclud\u00aded,\u201d Perez De Jesus said. \u201cI think now we\u2019re using dif\u00adfer\u00adent lan\u00adguage to high\u00adlight serv\u00ading every\u00adone.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty research has also been tar\u00adget\u00aded. For\u00admer UConn Pres\u00adi\u00addent Thomas Kat\u00adsouleas said the admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion is comb\u00ading through titles and descrip\u00adtions search\u00ading for key\u00adwords that indi\u00adcate the research might relate to DEI or focus on a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar minor\u00adi\u00adty group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe con\u00adtent-spe\u00adcif\u00adic attack is a whole\u00adsale can\u00adcel\u00adla\u00adtion of research grants and con\u00adtracts that have any\u00adthing to do with ide\u00adolo\u00adgies that the admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion does\u00adn\u2019t sup\u00adport,\u201d Kat\u00adsouleas said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heumann said this is gov\u00adern\u00admen\u00adtal over\u00adreach that pro\u00admotes a cul\u00adture of fear in acad\u00ade\u00admia as well as anti-intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adism.
