Chris Mur\u00adphy, a Demo\u00adc\u00adrat from Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut, warns that the coun\u00adtry is in the mid\u00addle of an author\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan takeover.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think some peo\u00adple think that there\u2019s a day when democ\u00adra\u00adcy dies, and some\u00adtimes there is,\u201d he said. \u201cSome\u00adtimes there\u2019s a coup in which, you know, the Pres\u00adi\u00addent gets exe\u00adcut\u00aded, gets hung from the gal\u00adlows, and your democ\u00adra\u00adcy is over. You know, in some places, elec\u00adtions get can\u00adceled, right? So you just stop hav\u00ading them. That\u2019s not what\u2019s going to hap\u00adpen in Amer\u00adi\u00adca. We\u2019re going to still have elec\u00adtions next Novem\u00adber. Jonathan Alter, a for\u00admer senior edi\u00adtor and colum\u00adnist at Newsweek and long\u00adtime polit\u00adi\u00adcal ana\u00adlyst for NBC and MSNBC, said that the protests helped Amer\u00adi\u00adcans focus on Trump\u2019s monarch-like actions. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a bril\u00adliant\u00adly designed protest because the phrase \u2018no kings\u2019 is broad enough to bring a lot of peo\u00adple togeth\u00ader who might dis\u00adagree on oth\u00ader issues, but under\u00adstand that our soci\u00adety, our coun\u00adtry, was found\u00aded on the idea of no kings,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alter said that with an esti\u00admat\u00aded 7 mil\u00adlion pro\u00adtes\u00adtors, the Octo\u00adber \u201cNo Kings\u201d protest, held in loca\u00adtions through\u00adout the coun\u00adtry, was col\u00adlec\u00adtive\u00adly the sec\u00adond largest protest in Amer\u00adi\u00adcan His\u00adto\u00adry, only beat\u00aden by Earth Day 1970. Despite the large num\u00adbers, Alter said the protests won\u2019t make imme\u00addi\u00adate change, but that they are caus\u00ading Trump\u2019s approval num\u00adbers to start slip\u00adping.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of times peo\u00adple go, \u2018what good did [protest\u00ading] do?\u2019 I\u2019m sure there were kids in UConn who were say\u00ading that noth\u00ading changed, but that\u2019s not the way protest works,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s move\u00adment build\u00ading, and it\u2019s cumu\u00adla\u00adtive so that, over time, he los\u00ades his legit\u00adi\u00adma\u00adcy and los\u00ades his hold over the coun\u00adtry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sec\u00adond round of \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests held Oct. 18, 2025, includ\u00aded a gath\u00ader\u00ading of thou\u00adsands at the Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut State Cap\u00adi\u00adtal in Hart\u00adford. Pro\u00adtes\u00adtor Melia Ben\u00adsussen said that she was protest\u00ading because peo\u00adple deserve to know the truth about what their gov\u00adern\u00adment is up to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo king means that you don\u2019t redis\u00adtrict for vot\u00ading, you don\u2019t make it so that no real infor\u00adma\u00adtion is dis\u00adtrib\u00aduted. It\u2019s no fas\u00adcism. It\u2019s say\u00ading peo\u00adple need to be able to vote on facts and know the truth. And this gov\u00adern\u00adment is not doing that,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro\u00adtes\u00adtor Migueli\u00adna How\u00adell said that that she believes deci\u00adsion-mak\u00ading pow\u00ader in the U.S. is meant to be left to the mass\u00ades, not one per\u00adson or gov\u00adern\u00adment. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, \u2018no kings\u2019 means share pow\u00ader. Share deci\u00adsion-mak\u00ading process\u00ades. We are a democ\u00adra\u00adcy. We are a coun\u00adtry that makes deci\u00adsions in lay\u00aders.
