Pho\u00adto by Sara Bedi\u00adgian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since tak\u00ading office in Jan\u00adu\u00adary 2025, the Trump admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion&nbsp;has can\u00adceled&nbsp;pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly approved&nbsp;research grants&nbsp;and&nbsp;with\u00adheld&nbsp;fund\u00ading at uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties&nbsp;nation\u00adwide.&nbsp;Many of the cuts have reflect\u00aded the&nbsp;admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion\u2019s&nbsp;oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion to diver\u00adsi\u00adty, equi\u00adty and inclu\u00adsion prac\u00adtices&nbsp;as well as greater scruti\u00adny of spend\u00ading in areas such as cli\u00admate change and pub\u00adlic health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While UConn has not&nbsp;been indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly tar\u00adget\u00aded&nbsp;by Trump or engaged in&nbsp;high-pro\u00adfile&nbsp;bat\u00adtles&nbsp;with the&nbsp;pres\u00adi\u00addent&nbsp;like oth\u00ader uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties such as Har\u00advard,&nbsp;Colum\u00adbia&nbsp;and Brown, it has&nbsp;been&nbsp;impact\u00aded&nbsp;by the administration\u2019s&nbsp;unprece\u00addent\u00aded&nbsp;research grant&nbsp;cuts&nbsp;and changes to&nbsp;fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UConn has lost $41&nbsp;mil\u00adlion from research grant ter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtions and unex\u00adpect\u00aded non-renewals,&nbsp;said&nbsp;Lind\u00adsay DiS\u00adte\u00adfano, inter\u00adim vice pres\u00adi\u00addent of research. Graph\u00adic by Sara Bedi\u00adgian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The fed\u00ader\u00adal cuts have&nbsp;direct\u00adly&nbsp;impact\u00aded&nbsp;the more than 1,700 fac\u00adul\u00adty,&nbsp;staff&nbsp;or grad\u00adu\u00adate assis\u00adtants&nbsp;across UConn and UConn Health&nbsp;whose salaries are paid in part by fed\u00ader\u00adal grants and pro\u00adgrams,&nbsp;accord\u00ading to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/-\/media\/opm\/bud-division\/reports\/federal-government-shutdown\/uconn---federal-government-shutdown-planning-memo---sept-30-2025.pdf?rev=5723f857eb274beca9cfc6e6986aced3#:~:text=UConn%20requires%20approximately%20$29M,year%20to%20federal%20grants\/programs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sep\u00adtem\u00adber memo<\/a>&nbsp;from UConn\u2019s Inter\u00adim Vice Pres\u00adi\u00addent for Finance Reka Wrynn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jef\u00adfrey Dudas,&nbsp;a polit\u00adi\u00adcal sci\u00adence&nbsp;pro\u00adfes\u00adsor who serves as&nbsp;pres\u00adi\u00addent of UConn\u2019s chap\u00adter&nbsp;of&nbsp;Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty Pro\u00adfes\u00adsors,&nbsp;had a two-year $135,000 grant from the Nation\u00adal Endow\u00adment of Human\u00adi\u00adties can\u00adceled&nbsp;in April after the first year.&nbsp;The&nbsp;grant fund\u00aded a&nbsp;writ\u00ading and pod\u00adcast&nbsp;project&nbsp;that told&nbsp;sto\u00adries of how arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence appeared in pop\u00adu\u00adlar cul\u00adture over the years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got a one-sen\u00adtence notice say\u00ading that the grant had been can\u00adceled, and there was no expla\u00adna\u00adtion giv\u00aden,\u201d he said. \u201cThere&nbsp;was no rea\u00adson\u00ading.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dudas said although the grant was small\u00ader than many fed\u00ader\u00adal&nbsp;grants, it was sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant with\u00adin the&nbsp;Depart\u00adment of Polit\u00adi\u00adcal Sci\u00adence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,400 endow\u00adment grants val\u00adued at $427 mil\u00adlion have been ter\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded nation\u00adwide as of April&nbsp;8,&nbsp;2025,&nbsp;accord\u00ading to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/2025\/04\/doge-restructuring-of-neh-hits-documentary-and-archival-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data\u00adbase<\/a>&nbsp;cre\u00adat\u00aded by the Asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion for Com\u00adput\u00aders and Human\u00adi\u00adties.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason&nbsp;Chang,&nbsp;a pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of his\u00adto\u00adry and Asian Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Stud\u00adies who is&nbsp;the depart\u00adment head of social and crit\u00adi\u00adcal inquiry, had a five-year&nbsp;minor\u00adi\u00adty-serv\u00ading grant&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Depart\u00adment of Edu\u00adca\u00adtion&nbsp;cut in Sep\u00adtem\u00adber. The grant, which&nbsp;Chang&nbsp;had for two years, fund\u00aded pro\u00adgram\u00adming at&nbsp;UConn Hart\u00adford to increase per\u00adse\u00adver\u00adance,&nbsp;reten\u00adtion&nbsp;and grad\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion rates for stu\u00addents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&nbsp;know how impact\u00adful these pro\u00adgrams are, and&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;work\u00ading to try to recon\u00adfig\u00adure and recon\u00adnect them and rescale the project that\u2019s sus\u00adtain\u00adable with what we have right now, so that we can con\u00adtin\u00adue serv\u00ading stu\u00addents,\u201d&nbsp;he&nbsp;said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McGar\u00adry&nbsp;said she&nbsp;has&nbsp;wit\u00adnessed&nbsp;a sen\u00adti\u00adment of fear&nbsp;spread&nbsp;across&nbsp;UConn&nbsp;as&nbsp;fac\u00adul\u00adty wor\u00adry&nbsp;that&nbsp;years&nbsp;ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded to&nbsp;fed\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly fund\u00aded&nbsp;research could&nbsp;come to an end,&nbsp;too.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s just&nbsp;this aura of awful\u00adness,\u201d McGar\u00adry said.&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s&nbsp;just&nbsp;delib\u00ader\u00adate&nbsp;because it inter\u00adrupts your abil\u00adi\u00adty to focus and have a path&nbsp;or&nbsp;a series of goals for the work that&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;doing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Break\u00addown of fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading cri\u00adsis<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addi\u00adtion to&nbsp;ter\u00admi\u00adnat\u00aded&nbsp;grants,&nbsp;there&nbsp;has also been a&nbsp;gen\u00ader\u00adal dete\u00adri\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion of fed\u00ader\u00adal fund\u00ading dol\u00adlars and&nbsp;sup\u00adport for&nbsp;indi\u00adrect costs, such as&nbsp;infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and build\u00ading main\u00adte\u00adnance, that dri\u00adves&nbsp;the research appa\u00adra\u00adtus at large,&nbsp;said&nbsp;Nathan Alder,&nbsp;pro\u00adfes\u00adsor of mol\u00ade\u00adc\u00adu\u00adlar and cel\u00adlu\u00adlar biol\u00ado\u00adgy&nbsp;and&nbsp;co-chair of the fed\u00ader\u00adal funds com\u00admit\u00adtee&nbsp;for UConn&nbsp;AAUP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alder&nbsp;research\u00ades&nbsp;chron\u00adic dis\u00adeases&nbsp;to&nbsp;devel\u00adop&nbsp;drugs.
