UConn Journalism Assistant Professor Marie K. Shanahan brought in a panel of journalists who have faced issues on the topic of race and racism, including Helen Ubinas, who writes for the Philadelphia Daily News among other publications, NBC News essayist Frances Kai-Hwa Wang, and Washington Post sports journalist Kevin Blackistone.
Shanahan advises her students to think about diversity, and to follow the International Federation of Journalists’s Diversity Checklist, to ensure fair reporting.
