Students
Zarrin Ahmed
Zarrin Ahmed is a junior and a journalism major. She d has worked extensively for the Daily Campus student newspaper at UConn. She has a strong interest in storytelling and aspires to become a reporter for National Geographic.
Kaitlyn Carroll
Kaitlyn Carroll is a junior journalism major and environmental studies minor. She is originally from South Glastonbury, Conn. and will begin work as a freelance stringer for the Associated Press this summer. Kaitlyn also enjoys photography and hopes to incorporate this aspect of her work into an environmental journalism career.
Sylvia Cunningham
Sylvia Cunningham is a 6th-semester journalism and political science double major at the University of Connecticut. She is from Wilton, Conn. and is a reporter and anchor for both the student radio and television stations on campus, WHUS 91.7 and UCTV. Last summer she was a national digital representative for the New York Times as well as a News Production/Reporting Intern at News 12 Connecticut. Starting this may, Sylvia will intern at MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes.
Maschal Mohiuddin
Maschal Mohiuddin is a sixth semester junior majoring in journalism and biology. of Connecticut. Maschal is from Glastonbury, Conn. and she has reported on environmental issues for the Manchester Journal Inquirer and Connecticut Woodlands magazine. She plans to pursue graduate degrees in medicine and journalism and eventually practice international medical journalism.
Daniel Candella
Daniel Candella is a journalism major with a strong interest in reporting and the environment. He is a contributor to the Connecticut Woodlands magazine. He hopes to graduate in 2015 and find a job in journalism somewhere in the country
Marina Cinami
Marina Cinami is a graduating senior and a journalism and political science double major. She is from Woodstock, Conn. and she has had broadcast internships with Fox CT and NBC Connecticut. Her career goal is to be a broadcast investigative journalist.
Domenica Ghanem
Domenica Ghanem is a junior with a double major in political science and journalism. She is from Hammonton, NJ and she hopes to have a career in public policy reform with a concentration on social justice issues.
Caitie Parmelee
Caitie Parmelee is a graduating senior journalism major and history minor. A resident of Storrs, Connecticut, and has worked on several multimedia projects on subjects including the study of moss and Islamic culture. She was in the previous journalism class that went to the Everglades and returned as part of an independent study with advanced requirements. This is her second trip to Florida to report on the Everglades. She hopes to pursue a career in the non-profit field.
Marvin Williams
Marvin Williams, a junior majoring in journalism with a minor in business. He is from Long Island, NY, he is president of the Black Students Association, and he has an interest in photography and video editing. He plans to attend law school after graduation.

Paul Lyzun
Bob Wyss
Bob Wyss joined the Journalism Department in 2002 and he is currently an Associate Professor. His specialty is print journalism with an interest in environmental coverage. He continues to be an active freelance writer and since arriving at the university he has written two books and more than 70 newspaper and magazine articles for national and regional publications. Before coming to the university he was an editor and reporter for 28 years for the Providence Journal.
Credits and Acknowledgements
This course was taught as one of the many offerings of the University of Connecticut Journalism Department, the only accredited journalism program in New England. Students learned about the mechanics of beat reporting and specifically the Everglades, they traveled to Florida from March 16 to 20 2015, and they spent the remainder of the semester producing these reports. Our thanks goes to Department Chair Maureen Croteau, Rebecca Ortinez and in Florida to Neil Santaniella, Paul Gray, Don Fox, Gary Ritter, Nate Ralph, Linda Friar, Christi Carmichael, Shauna Cotrell, Bleu Waters, Aida Arik, Patrick Boyce, and the many others providing assistance.
