Zarrin Ahmed

Zarrin Ahmed is a junior and a jour­nal­ism major. She d has worked exten­sive­ly for the Dai­ly Cam­pus stu­dent news­pa­per at UConn. She has a strong inter­est in sto­ry­telling and aspires to become a reporter for Nation­al Geographic.

Kaitlyn

Kait­lyn Carroll

Kait­lyn Car­roll is a junior jour­nal­ism major and envi­ron­men­tal stud­ies minor. She is orig­i­nal­ly from South Glas­ton­bury, Conn. and will begin work as a free­lance stringer for the Asso­ci­at­ed Press this sum­mer. Kait­lyn also enjoys pho­tog­ra­phy and hopes to incor­po­rate this aspect of her work into an envi­ron­men­tal jour­nal­ism career.

Sylvia

Sylvia Cun­ning­ham

Sylvia Cun­ning­ham is a 6th-semes­ter jour­nal­ism and polit­i­cal sci­ence dou­ble major at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Con­necti­cut. She is from Wilton, Conn. and is a reporter and anchor for both the stu­dent radio and tele­vi­sion sta­tions on cam­pus, WHUS 91.7 and UCTV. Last sum­mer she was a nation­al dig­i­tal rep­re­sen­ta­tive for the New York Times as well as a News Production/Reporting Intern at News 12 Con­necti­cut. Start­ing this may, Sylvia will intern at MSNBC’s All In with Chris Hayes.

Maschal

Maschal Mohi­ud­din

Maschal Mohi­ud­din is a sixth semes­ter junior major­ing in jour­nal­ism and biol­o­gy. of Con­necti­cut. Maschal is from Glas­ton­bury, Conn. and she has report­ed on envi­ron­men­tal issues for the Man­ches­ter Jour­nal Inquir­er and Con­necti­cut Wood­lands mag­a­zine. She plans to pur­sue grad­u­ate degrees in med­i­cine and jour­nal­ism and even­tu­al­ly prac­tice inter­na­tion­al med­ical journalism.

Daniel Can­del­la

Daniel Can­del­la is a jour­nal­ism major with a strong inter­est in report­ing and the envi­ron­ment. He is a con­trib­u­tor to the Con­necti­cut Wood­lands mag­a­zine. He hopes to grad­u­ate in 2015 and find a job in jour­nal­ism some­where in the country

Mari­na Cinami

Mari­na Cina­mi is a grad­u­at­ing senior and a jour­nal­ism and polit­i­cal sci­ence dou­ble major. She is from Wood­stock, Conn. and she has had broad­cast intern­ships with Fox CT and NBC Con­necti­cut. Her career goal is to be a broad­cast inves­tiga­tive journalist.

Domeni­ca Ghanem

Domeni­ca Ghanem is a junior with a dou­ble major in polit­i­cal sci­ence and jour­nal­ism. She is from Ham­mon­ton, NJ and she hopes to have a career in pub­lic pol­i­cy reform with a con­cen­tra­tion on social jus­tice issues.

Caitie

Caitie Parmelee

Caitie Parmelee is a grad­u­at­ing senior jour­nal­ism major and his­to­ry minor. A res­i­dent of Storrs, Con­necti­cut, and has worked on sev­er­al mul­ti­me­dia projects on sub­jects includ­ing the study of moss and Islam­ic cul­ture. She was in the pre­vi­ous jour­nal­ism class that went to the Ever­glades and returned as part of an inde­pen­dent study with advanced require­ments. This is her sec­ond trip to Flori­da to report on the Ever­glades. She hopes to pur­sue a career in the non-prof­it field.

 

 

Mar­vin Williams

Mar­vin Williams, a junior major­ing in jour­nal­ism with a minor in busi­ness. He is from Long Island, NY, he is pres­i­dent of the Black Stu­dents Asso­ci­a­tion, and he has an inter­est in pho­tog­ra­phy and video edit­ing. He plans to attend law school after graduation.

Paul

Paul Lyzun

Paul Lyzun has been the Instruc­tion­al Devel­op­er for the Jour­nal­ism Depart­ment at UConn since 2011. His respon­si­bil­i­ties as media tech­nol­o­gist include man­ag­ing the depart­men­t’s web­site, pre­sent­ing soft­ware and media pro­duc­tion work­shops for stu­dents, assist­ing fac­ul­ty with the inte­gra­tion of dig­i­tal media into their cours­es and pro­vid­ing tech­ni­cal sup­port for both stu­dents and fac­ul­ty. Pri­or adven­tures in the real world include work as a cor­po­rate tech­nol­o­gy instruc­tor, graph­ic design­er, art teacher and dig­i­tal pre­press manager. 
Bob

Bob Wyss

Bob Wyss joined the Jour­nal­ism Depart­ment in 2002 and he is cur­rent­ly an Asso­ciate Pro­fes­sor.  His spe­cial­ty is print jour­nal­ism with an inter­est in envi­ron­men­tal cov­er­age.  He con­tin­ues to be an active free­lance writer and since arriv­ing at the uni­ver­si­ty he has writ­ten two books and more than 70 news­pa­per and mag­a­zine arti­cles for nation­al and region­al pub­li­ca­tions.  Before com­ing to the uni­ver­si­ty he was an edi­tor and reporter for 28 years for the Prov­i­dence Journal.

 Credits and Acknowledgements

This course was taught as  one of the many offer­ings of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Con­necti­cut Jour­nal­ism Depart­ment, the only accred­it­ed jour­nal­ism pro­gram in New Eng­land.  Stu­dents learned about the mechan­ics of beat report­ing and specif­i­cal­ly the Ever­glades, they trav­eled to Flori­da from March 16 to 20 2015, and they spent the remain­der of the semes­ter pro­duc­ing these reports.  Our thanks goes to Depart­ment Chair Mau­reen Croteau, Rebec­ca Ortinez and in Flori­da to Neil San­taniel­la, Paul Gray, Don Fox, Gary Rit­ter, Nate Ralph, Lin­da Fri­ar,  Christi Carmichael, Shau­na Cotrell, Bleu Waters, Aida Arik, Patrick Boyce, and the many oth­ers pro­vid­ing assistance.
