Wethersfield Cove, the famil\u00adiar but some\u00adtimes over\u00adlooked nat\u00adur\u00adal com\u00adpan\u00adion of the high\u00adway, is one of 143 trib\u00adu\u00adtaries to the Connecticut River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During warmer months, the area is pop\u00adu\u00adlar for walk\u00aders, fish\u00ading and boat\u00ading enthu\u00adsi\u00adasts, mak\u00ading use of the lengthy dock. Photo by Elijah Polance<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>An abun\u00addance of fish, birds and plant life con\u00adtribute to the vibrant ecosys\u00adtem of the cove. A walk along the sandy shore or by Folly Brook, the canal that con\u00adnects the cove to the Connecticut River, reveals great blue herons search\u00ading for a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But \u201cNo Swimming\u201d signs near the park\u00ading lot and occa\u00adsion\u00adal shut\u00addowns of the cove after heavy rain\u00adfall tell a dif\u00adfer\u00adent story that has plagued the area for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the con\u00adsent order agree\u00adment between the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), com\u00adbined sewer sys\u00adtems in south\u00adern Hartford over\u00adflow into Wethersfield Cove. As of 2020, there are 7 over\u00adflow sites at the cove. The sewage can dis\u00adsi\u00adpate through the cove or enter the Connecticut River through Folly Brook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The struc\u00adture of Wethersfield Cove ampli\u00adfied the prob\u00adlems of waste enter\u00ading it, said Michael Dietz, the direc\u00adtor of the Connecticut Institute of Water Resources at the University of Connecticut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cove is fed by Folly Brook and the cur\u00adrent moves through the wide part of the cove toward a nar\u00adrow inlet that runs under\u00adneath I\u201191, enter\u00ading the main stem of the Connecticut River by a nar\u00adrow inlet. \u201cSo there\u2019s very lit\u00adtle flush\u00ading that takes place because of that nar\u00adrow entrance,\u201d Dietz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When sewage over\u00adflows into the cove, it can take time for it to leave. Not only does it pol\u00adlute Wethersfield Cove, but the even\u00adtu\u00adal flush\u00ading can make the area of the Connecticut River that con\u00adnects to Folly Brook a risk to swim in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dietz point\u00aded out that res\u00adi\u00addents near Wethersfield Cove have had to face sewage back\u00adflow\u00ading into their homes, flood\u00ading base\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-stretch is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sewage and Health in Wethersfield Cove\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1085870690?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring CSO events, even with small amounts of rain, like half an inch of rain, people\u2019s base\u00adments were back\u00ading up with sewage,\u201d Dietz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MDC has a plan to stop the flood\u00ading into the cove and of the hous\u00ades near the cove: the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel, now planned to oper\u00adate by the sum\u00admer of 2026. Upon com\u00adple\u00adtion, the four-mile- long tun\u00adnel will hold back excess stormwa\u00adter and waste\u00adwater in south\u00adern Hartford that would have over\u00adflowed into Folley Brook and Wethersfield Cove. Pollutants that run over roads, includ\u00ading garbage and fer\u00adtil\u00adiz\u00aders, can also enter the water. Additionally, a 2011 <a href=\"https:\/\/newsletter.blogs.wesleyan.edu\/2011\/10\/12\/varekamp-students-chart-mercury-pollution-in-cove\/\">study<\/a> by Johann Varekamp of Wesleyan University doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded large amounts of mer\u00adcury in the water from hun\u00addreds of years of indus\u00adtri\u00adal dis\u00adcharges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Ozmian, a Newington res\u00adi\u00addent and a har\u00adbor mas\u00adter for Wethersfield, said that when the cove level rises dur\u00ading heavy storms, boaters are at risk. The water can also flood the park\u00ading lot, dam\u00adag\u00ading parked vehi\u00adcles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFlooding and the breeze, when the water gets high, col\u00adlects trees off the shore and breaks it down into the chan\u00adnel and into the river,\u201d Ozmian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But he said he has some reser\u00adva\u00adtions about the water qual\u00adi\u00adty. \u201cI would not swim in the cove [or Connecticut River] until Glastonbury, which is not far from the cove,\u201d Ozmian said. Glastonbury is less than two miles south of Wethersfield Cove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhea Drozdenko, a river stew\u00adard at the Connecticut River Conservancy, said Wethersfield Cove is a much health\u00adi\u00ader body of water than it was 50 years ago, before the fed\u00ader\u00adal Clean Water Act. She said that back then, runoff and CSO pol\u00adlu\u00adtion were more preva\u00adlent, but now the water is most\u00adly healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI find when I talk to folks from Wethersfield Cove, there\u2019s this per\u00adcep\u00adtion that the cove is just dirty, it\u2019s unsafe to be in, and yet we do week\u00adly water test\u00ading there and in gen\u00ader\u00adal, Wethersfield Cove\u2014unless it\u2019s flooded\u2014is safe enough for both swim\u00adming and boat\u00ading,\u201d Drozdenko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the ways the Connecticut River Conservancy has con\u00adnect\u00aded peo\u00adple with Wethersfield Cove is through its \u201cCompass Youth Collaborative Paddle,\u201d an event held with Compass Youth Collaborative, a Hartford orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion work\u00ading to help young peo\u00adple tran\u00adsi\u00adtion into adult\u00adhood through kayak\u00ading lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe real\u00adly advo\u00adcate for, you know, the respon\u00adsi\u00adble use of the Connecticut River and mak\u00ading sure that com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties do feel con\u00adnect\u00aded, espe\u00adcial\u00adly if they\u2019ve his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly felt dis\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00aded,\u201d Drozdenko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/connecticutriver.us\/node\/495\">water tests<\/a> from the Connecticut River Conservancy, which occur week\u00adly from June to August, there was one test in 2024 and one test in 2023 that showed Wethersfield Cove was not safe for swim\u00adming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, it was unsafe for swim\u00adming or boat\u00ading on two days. In 2021, there were four days where the water was not safe for swim\u00adming and two days where the water was not safe for swim\u00adming or boat\u00ading. Tests show\u00ading unsafe water often cor\u00adre\u00adlate with rain\u2014but not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drozdenko said water safe\u00adty is eval\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded by the con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtion of <em>E. coli <\/em>bac\u00adte\u00adria in the water. <em>E. coli <\/em>is present in sewage because of human waste and agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal runoff from manure. High <em>E. coli <\/em>con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtion implies the pres\u00adence of these pol\u00adlu\u00adtants in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ozmian is opti\u00admistic about the grad\u00adual decline of CSO shut\u00addowns and flood\u00ading issues involv\u00ading Wethersfield Cove and near\u00adby res\u00adi\u00addents. He believes Wethersfield Cove is a valu\u00adable loca\u00adtion for peo\u00adple liv\u00ading near\u00adby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great place to go down there, espe\u00adcial\u00adly with the kids,\u201d Ozmian said. \u201cGoing out to boat with fam\u00adi\u00adlies, it\u2019s a nice, cen\u00adtral loca\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p><em>TOP IMAGE: Wethersfield Cove at sun\u00adset on a late win\u00adter\u2019s day.
