On a Tues\u00adday in late Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 2025, Tobey stood behind her booth on Fair\u00adfield Way at the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Con\u00adnecti\u00adcut, which was cov\u00adered in mul\u00adti\u00adcol\u00adored bead\u00aded jew\u00adel\u00adry and wampum designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, as an adult, Tobey brings her busi\u00adness, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/beltweaver\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/beltweaver\/\">Beltweaver<\/a>, to fairs and trib\u00adal events and sells her jew\u00adel\u00adry and crafts with the goal of keep\u00ading Indige\u00adnous tra\u00addi\u00adtions alive.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is impor\u00adtant to use nat\u00adur\u00adal mate\u00adri\u00adals, but I don\u2019t kill any\u00adthing. I use mate\u00adri\u00adals I find on the reser\u00adva\u00adtion and use ani\u00admal skin only if it is from an ani\u00admal that was hit on the side of the road,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tobey\u2019s work fea\u00adtures wampum, oys\u00adter shells, deer leather and duck feath\u00aders. She said it is fine for any\u00adone to buy and wear her work, even if they are not Indige\u00adnous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do it to keep tra\u00addi\u00adtions going. That\u2019s who we are. That\u2019s what we do,\u201d she said. \u201cI do try to sell my stuff in spaces that aren\u2019t heard as much, like Indige\u00adnous com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties and LGBTQ com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she believes in the respect\u00adful shar\u00ading of knowl\u00adedge, stat\u00ading that non-Native peo\u00adple can learn how to make crafts as long as they are not sell\u00ading it. She said this is because there is a dis\u00adtinct dif\u00adfer\u00adence between com\u00admer\u00adcial\u00adly sold items and \u201creal authen\u00adtic\u201d Indige\u00adnous work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tobey explained that her tribe is work\u00ading to edu\u00adcate oth\u00ader trib\u00adal mem\u00adbers on how to make Indige\u00adnous jew\u00adel\u00adry so they can reclaim this prac\u00adtice into their own cul\u00adtur\u00adal tra\u00addi\u00adtions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading skills in young peo\u00adple is very impor\u00adtant to remind\u00ading native peo\u00adple who they are, UConn Pro\u00adfes\u00adsor Sandy Grande explained. \u201cIt\u2019s not just like an art object.
