Pots like this were used to brew cof\u00adfee or choco\u00adlate, show\u00ading a glimpse into native life dur\u00ading the time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nagpra\/index.htm\">Native Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Graves Pro\u00adtec\u00adtion and Repa\u00adtri\u00ada\u00adtion Act<\/a> (NAGPRA), passed in 1990,&nbsp;helps to return cul\u00adtur\u00adal arti\u00adfacts to tribes and muse\u00adums such as the Mashan\u00adtuck\u00adet Pequot Muse\u00adum. The law requires fed\u00ader\u00adal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions that hold Native arti\u00adfacts and bur\u00adial remains to return them to tribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the act has helped many tribes reclaim their cul\u00adture, Carter said there is still a long way to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt still doesn\u2019t have the teeth. It still doesn\u2019t have what I would con\u00adsid\u00ader the struc\u00adture to address that fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal aspect of what our val\u00adue sys\u00adtem is,\u201d Carter argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dis\u00adplays show\u00ading arti\u00adfacts and scenes that cap\u00adture moments in Indige\u00adnous his\u00adto\u00adry have helped North\u00adeast\u00adern Native com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties reclaim their his\u00adto\u00adry by cor\u00adrect\u00ading myths often assumed about Indige\u00adnous peo\u00adples. In one dis\u00adplay, vil\u00adlagers col\u00adlect corn, which was a cen\u00adtral part of native agri\u00adcul\u00adture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hand\u00adheld audio guides reflect Indige\u00adnous oral his\u00adto\u00adry, which Carter said is high\u00adly val\u00adued.
