My name is Jordan Coach, and I’m studying journalism and political science at the University of Connecticut. This past year has been a whirlwind of change: new school, new major, and new career choice. I now want to go into political communications and eventually join a major lobbyist firm. I’ve taken a digital journalism course in the past before, but this class introduces more applications and has more of an online focus than my previous class, so hopefully I can learn some new ways to diversify my communications skills.
My news exposure is completely dependent on my living environment. For example, I usually watch both local and national NBC news outlets when I’m at home. I’m also extremely active on sports news sites, and I sometimes might click on links on my Twitter or Facebook feed. I don’t often have access to a television when I live on campus, however, so I mostly rely on Courant.com or NYTimes.com as my main sources of news during the school year.
My favorite news sources are definitely online newspapers. I really like print-style writing, but having everything online makes news so much more accessible and convenient to read. My personal favorite is Courant.com because it provides a mixture of local, state, and national news. I really like the site’s town-by-town section, since there’s usually two to four local stories being published daily. I’m extremely interested in government and politics reporting because of the constant drama and complex story dynamics. I view political reporting as like covering a real-life “Game of Thrones”, and who wouldn’t want that job?
