My family and I took a short trip up to Kennebunkport, Maine this weekend to visit relatives and I took the opportunity to take some pictures in a state in which the scenery looks like it could be put on a postcard everywhere you walk (except when amateur me is taking the photo evidently).
All of the following photos are accredited to Matt Zabierek.
Cape Neddick Lighthouse
Located at Cape Neddick in York, Maine, this lighthouse is considered by some to be one of the most picturesque lighthouses in the state. It first began operation in 1879 after Congress approved it in 1874 as a measure to reduce boating accidents off the coast of Maine. Although the public does not have access to the grounds of the lighthouse today, that doesn’t stop people like me from taking pictures.

The Wedding Cake House
Originally built in 1825 by local shipbuilder George Bourne, the building originally started out as a “stately federal-style brick home that was occupied by Bourne and his wife Jane. After a fire that nearly destroyed the entire home, Bourn was compelled by the death of loved one to restore the carriage house and barn using inspiration from European Gothic architecture. It is now reffered to as the Wedding Cake House simply because of its wedding cake-like appearance. Many locals called it the most photographed home in the state.
(Personal note: My mom, sisters and I visited Maine a handful of times when we were little and this house was one of our favorite things to visit/look at, so it was cool to get to see it again years later.
Also, probably worth noting that some of these photos were taken just moments before a woman — who I was unaware currently lived there — came out to politely ask what I was doing in her backyard.)

Walker’s Point
This compound was the summer home to President George H. W. Bush. It was originally purchased in the late 19th century by the President’s great-grandfather and has been passed down in the Bush family ever since. The gate to the property is guarded by secret service members at all times (why I could only get a wide shot). The estate is said to include its own swimming pool, tennis court, golf-green and boat dock among other amenities. Among those who have visited the estate include Bill Clinton, Vladimir Putin and former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. Many locals told me that although George H. W. Bush does not still regularly visit, George W. Bush does stay in the complex a few times a year, however I wasn’t able to contact him to confirm this.
