The idea stems back to the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal con\u00adtext of car\u00ading for ill fam\u00adi\u00adly mem\u00adbers being an expect\u00aded role for women, with\u00adin the pri\u00adva\u00adcy of the fam\u00adi\u00adly. The same chap\u00adter argues this sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion for women remains true today despite a more flex\u00adi\u00adble shar\u00ading of house\u00adhold tasks by men and women in West\u00adern soci\u00adeties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strides have been made toward gen\u00adder equal\u00adi\u00adty in the Unit\u00aded States, yet the patri\u00adarchy remains strong, and gen\u00adder social\u00adiza\u00adtion still leads the gen\u00ader\u00adal pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion to con\u00adform to tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal gen\u00adder roles. This places an over\u00adwhelm\u00ading care\u00adgiv\u00ading bur\u00adden on women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedoubleshift.com\/about\/#:~:text=Katherine%20is%20a%20former%20Harvard,better%20support%20caregivers%20at%20work.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.thedoubleshift.com\/about\/#:~:text=Katherine%20is%20a%20former%20Harvard,better%20support%20caregivers%20at%20work.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kather\u00adine Gold\u00adstein<\/a> is a dig\u00adi\u00adtal jour\u00adnal\u00adist and con\u00adsul\u00adtant focus\u00ading on issues of women and work, and is also a moth\u00ader of three.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though she\u2019s been a jour\u00adnal\u00adist for about 15 years, she\u2019s worked for her\u00adself as a free\u00adlancer for the last eight years. Gold\u00adstein has not worked full-time for a news orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion since ear\u00adly 2016, a change which was spurred after the birth of her first son.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a real\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult expe\u00adri\u00adence when my first son was born,\u201d Gold\u00adstein said on a video call in Feb\u00adru\u00adary of 2024. \u201cHe had health prob\u00adlems and was hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adized after he was born.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her return to work when her son was three months old was, \u201ca dis\u00adas\u00adter on many lev\u00adels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI got fired when he was six months old and that real\u00adly set me off on sort of an exis\u00adten\u00adtial cri\u00adsis,\u201d Gold\u00adstein said. \u201cMy iden\u00adti\u00adty was real\u00adly staked in being a com\u00adpe\u00adtent, suc\u00adcess\u00adful pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal and I did not know how to rec\u00adon\u00adcile what was hap\u00adpen\u00ading to me pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly and also becom\u00ading a moth\u00ader.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though los\u00ading her job was the result of a \u201ccom\u00adplex sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion,\u201d Gold\u00adstein not\u00aded that her job was an \u201cextreme\u00adly dif\u00adfi\u00adcult envi\u00adron\u00adment to be a new mom in,\u201d espe\u00adcial\u00adly since she was the only per\u00adson who had a child on her team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Gold\u00adstein was named a 2017 Har\u00advard Nie\u00adman Jour\u00adnal\u00adism Fel\u00adlow. In her 2017 piece for Nie\u00adman Reports \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/articles\/where-are-the-mothers\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/niemanreports.org\/articles\/where-are-the-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Where are the Moth\u00aders?<\/a>,\u201d she eval\u00adu\u00adat\u00aded the news industry\u2019s need to meet the needs of par\u00adents and cre\u00adate a bet\u00adter work-life bal\u00adance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gold\u00adstein explained that a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ku.edu\/news\/article\/2015\/03\/23\/study-shows-journalism-burnout-affecting-women-more-men\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.ku.edu\/news\/article\/2015\/03\/23\/study-shows-journalism-burnout-affecting-women-more-men\" target=\"_blank\">2015 Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Kansas study<\/a> found that female jour\u00adnal\u00adists face a high\u00ader risk of burnout and typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly have more plans to leave the indus\u00adtry than their male coun\u00adter\u00adparts. Much of this is due to feel\u00ading unsup\u00adport\u00aded by their orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions and desires to bal\u00adance work and fam\u00adi\u00adly life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2015 study found that 67% of the women sur\u00adveyed said they either intend\u00aded to leave jour\u00adnal\u00adism or were uncer\u00adtain about their future, com\u00adpared to 55% of men sur\u00adveyed who said the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers who ana\u00adlyzed the num\u00adbers using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/psychology\/gender-socialization\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/psychology\/gender-socialization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gen\u00adder social\u00adiza\u00adtion<\/a> the\u00ado\u00adry \u2014 which posits that soci\u00adety puts expec\u00adta\u00adtions on peo\u00adple based on their gen\u00adder from a very young age \u2014&nbsp; found their find\u00adings sup\u00adport\u00aded. In par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar, women are expect\u00aded to pro\u00advide the major\u00adi\u00adty of fam\u00adi\u00adly care and raise chil\u00addren, while men are expect\u00aded to be bread\u00adwin\u00adners and pri\u00ador\u00adi\u00adtize work over the fam\u00adi\u00adly. The sur\u00advey results sup\u00adport\u00aded this, show\u00ading sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly high\u00ader rates of role over\u00adload for women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/business-work\/2017\/women-dominate-journalism-schools-but-newsrooms-are-still-a-different-story\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/business-work\/2017\/women-dominate-journalism-schools-but-newsrooms-are-still-a-different-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make up about two-thirds of grad\u00adu\u00adates in jour\u00adnal\u00adism or mass com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions pro\u00adgrams<\/a>, yet the media indus\u00adtry is just one-third women.
