I worked along­side FOX61 sports anchor Jon­ah Karp and ESPN Pro­duc­er Steve Buck­heit. I cov­ered the Hart­ford Ath­let­ic before their match against an MLS team. I inter­viewed their coach, Bren­dan Burke, and asked him how he want­ed MLS teams to per­ceive his team.

Sgt. Pep­per­oni has been a favorite gath­er­ing spot for Uni­ver­si­ty of Con­necti­cut stu­dents. In this slideshow, we pro­file one of its own­ers, Sam Tohlus, who, as a small-busi­ness own­er, nav­i­gat­ed many chal­lenges dur­ing their years of oper­a­tion, from the COVID-19 pan­dem­ic to ris­ing oper­at­ing costs. Sam gives a tour through the for­mer store one last time.

Their deci­sion to close Sgt. Pep­per­oni ear­li­er this year reflects broad­er strug­gles fac­ing small restau­rants across the Unit­ed States. The slideshow cap­tures the love of Sgt. Pep­per­oni, its impact on the com­mu­ni­ty, and the bit­ter­sweet farewell shared by cus­tomers and staff through pho­tos.
