STORRS — Fourteen high school students from Connecticut, New York and Illinois spent a week in June at the University of Connecticut to learn about multimedia journalism with professor Julie Serkosky.

The students — Sheila Andrade, Melanie Benalcazar, Davian Bowles, Michael Butterworth Jr., Anne Canale, Aolani Curt, Dannae Flores Cabrera, Zoe Foster, Amirah Gallimore, Sabira Hussaini, Jesse Kocher, Alyssa Levy, Alondra Luna and Olivia Stewart — learned how to use their cellphones to take well-composed photos and video, effectively interview and cobble together information for an engaging news story.

The students interviewed Matthew Marshall, curator of education at the Benton Museum of Art, about the museum’s new and current exhibits. They also spoke with William Peterson, UConn’s assistant athletic director of communications, who led them on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Burton Family Athletic Complex. Toward the end of the week, they visited FOX 61 in Hartford with Digital Executive Producer Doug Stewart to learn how a newscast is put together.
Below are photos of the group outside our Herbst Hall classroom and at FOX 61. Here is the multimedia news story they produced.
