Heading Down South: The Construction of a new residence hall at South Campus

On this specific edition of the Cold Cut Elaborations podcast, the host, Cole Stefan, highlights the construction of a new residence hall in the South Campus area at the University of Connecticut. The new building, which caught the host by surprise when it was first announced in August of 2022, is expected to be completed by the Fall 2024 semester and will include a 500-seat dining hall in addition to more beds.

To help gain some insight into the project, Mr. Stefan interviewed Project Director Robert Corbett. In addition to directing this project, Corbett is the Executive Director of UPDC at UConn & Director of Real Estate and Regional Projects. UPDC, better known as UConn Planning, Design, and Construction, oversees all the university’s construction projects that have occurred and are occurring from the Student Recreation Center to the revitalization of the athletic facilities.

During this podcast episode, the two people involved in the interview will reference the logistics of the building itself, accommodations to students who may want to sleep in, the new dining hall, what roads may be closed as a result of the project, when construction will begin on the project, and upcoming projects coming soon to the university.

A “Faculty Row” House, located on the site of the new residence and dining hall, that will be moved across the street once construction begins. Fencing around the house has been in place as early as October 21, 2022.

All sounds used throughout this interview, except for the music track, were recorded by Cole Stefan. Images/renderings of the new South Campus Residence Hall were collected from the Student Affairs Website as well as UConn Today.
