Rights + Writing
Internships in writing and rights
I interned at We-Ha.com, a hyperlocal news site, where I gained valuable writing and editing experience. I also interned for the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence and connected my love for rights and writing into one. I wrote and edited press releases, social media campaigns and the coalition’s media guide, gaining experience in the communications field. CCADV is where I found my passion for nonprofit work and realized that it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Additionally, I gained some more experience I could use in this field as a student-written communications specialist for UConn’s School of Engineering. You can read examples of the work I’ve done on my original work page.
Two years of newsletter experience
Along with my internships, I worked on The Roundup CT newsletter, a weekly collection of Connecticut’s local news written and edited by UConn students. I also worked on podcasts and was able to interview local and national journalists about politics, sports and hyperlocal news. Below is one of my podcasts, in which I talk with former journalists who made a career switch into politics.
Communications experience
In my job with the University of Connecticut’s School of Engineering and my internship at CCADV, I learned to use social media engagement data to create a target audience for each post. I understand how to build a social media campaign from the ground up in not only the human rights sector but also for strictly promotional content. I have experience dealing with explaining complex subjects and I am willing to make any topic my niche. Below is another podcast I produced for the School of Engineering where I had to combine my storytelling and multi-media skills on difficult topics.
