For the past six years, the University of Connecticut has seen an increase in freshman applications, while admissions has only slightly risen.
“I really think it shows how competitive our school is getting,” said UConn senior Emily Mantell.
Mantell explained, that UConn’s commitment to funding research initiatives, such as the biological collections in the ecology and evolutionary biology department. “The collection currently houses millions of specimens from around the globe and in a combined effort by faculty, students and staff is in the process of digitizing the entire archive,” she said.
Other surrounding schools, like Eastern Connecticut State University have not seen quite as dramatic increases in applications and admissions.
In 2013, 3,042 freshman applied to Eastern and 1,575 were admitted for an admissions percentage of %51.8. Compared to UConn which saw 27,479 applications and 14,745 were admitted for a percentage of %53.6.
With campus wide renovations, and an increase in research opportunities the future for UConn seems bright and even brighter for the students attending. “The campus is beautiful, and they seem to be really taking care of everything, and building new projects, I’m glad I chose to be a “husky,”” said Mantell.
