This pho­to sto­ry was pitched, report­ed, pho­tographed and writ­ten by Gian­ni Sal­is­bury ’26, a senior at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Con­necti­cut major­ing in Jour­nal­ism with minors in Polit­i­cal Sci­ence and Native Amer­i­can and Indige­nous Stud­ies. Gian­ni has suc­cess­ful­ly com­plet­ed intern­ships at The Day news­pa­per in New Lon­don, Con­necti­cut and at Val­ley Shore Com­mu­ni­ty Tele­vi­sion in West­brook, Con­necti­cut. She works as a staff writer for The Dai­ly Cam­pus, UConn’s stu­dent run news­pa­per, and as a design­er for Nut­meg Pub­lish­ing, the UConn stu­dent orga­ni­za­tion that pub­lish­es a semes­ter­ly mag­a­zine and the annu­al UConn year­book.

Her project was pro­duced as part of an Fall 2025 inde­pen­dent study led by UConn Jour­nal­ism asso­ciate pro­fes­sors Scott Wal­lace and Marie K. Shana­han.
